How to end your tenancy on a positive note

At any time during your tenancy;

 

  1. Confirm when your tenancy will officially end and if there is anything you need to do.
  2. Get a copy of your inventory and any other check in information such as photographs or videos.

 

 

One month before the end of your tenancy;

 

  1. Confirm with you landlord or letting agent if there is an official check out inspection and do you need to be present.
  2. Begin collecting boxes to pack up your possessions in. 
  3. Start going through your possessions and decluttering.

 

 

One week before the end of your tenancy;

 

  1. If you are responsible for the utilities let your utility suppliers know you are leaving.
  2. Set up a mail redirection service.
  3. Start packing non essential items.
  4. Use up food supplies in the freezer and cupboards.
  5. Clear out cupboards.

 

 

Day before the end of the tenancy;

 

  1. Defrost the freezer.
  2. Pack remaining items.
  3. Deep clean property.
  4. Refer to the inventory and photographs to ensure that any furniture is in the same room as at the beginning of the tenancy.
  5. Check shed, loft space (if you have access) to ensure no possessions are left behind.

 

Last Day of the tenancy;

 

 

  1. Collect all keys for property.
  2. Take final meter readings for gas, electricity and water. Phone these through to your utility suppliers.
  3. Check all cupboards for any forgotten possessions.
  4. Make sure your landlord or letting agent has a forwarding address for you.
  5. Take final photos or video of the property to confirm the condition at the end of the tenancy.
